What’s this all about?
Well it’s always ‘Yearone’ here at Yearone HQ. I’m Graeme Cessford and I’d like to let you into a little secret, it’s this... If you have a dream never, ever, give up on that dream, keep going, even when you are surrounded by good-willed doubters. I kept going, even when everyone around me thought I was ‘barking at the moon’. In my case, no one called Cessford had ever played First Class cricket. Records on the subject go back as long ago as eighteen hundred and sixty four. That’s a long time and a lot of cricketers but no one by the name of Cessford had ever graced the pages of that lovely yellow dust-jacketed cricketing reference book called Wisden.
As a youngster I wanted to change that.
I tried the more traditional way by trying to get noticed through my local County Cricket Development Squad. Sadly, like so many others before me it didn’t work out and I guess I could’ve simply drifted off into amateur sport like those many others. I didn’t, I adopted a philosophy of starting each year anew and refreshed (every year became a new Yearone) with a set of revised life-challenges and targets all aimed at achieving my ultimate goal, get a Professional Cricketing contract and get your name in that book! The path was truly tortuous and involved playing summer cricket in New Zealand, Western Australia, Minor Counties and Premier League cricket in the North of England.
Joining the RAF was a pivotal moment in my life though as this new direction allowed me time to work on my game more than ever before. The help and the hard work paid off and my efforts were noticed by the late Damian D’Oliveria at Worcestershire C.C.C. A great man, sorely missed. With his encouragement I went on to sign a two year professional contract with Worcestershire C.C.C., I’d achieved my lifelong ambition and yes on page 1489 of the 2014 Wisden Anthology ‘Cessford’ is there.
That’s what its about then. Make your own future. Follow Yearone adopt the philosophy and fulfil your dreams…
